The short-lived career of baseball’s first home run hitter

Baseball didn’t always have fences, and the rules used to make hitting fly balls a really, really bad idea. But somebody had to hit the first home run* in major league history. That somebody was Ross Barnes, who went from arguably the most accomplished batter in the brand new National League to effectively out of baseball within a few years.
